One of the most complex RAT missions in history

The work was carried out over two months in fine Eastern country weather, where the primary activity was to change 2 large torches and a flame trap. In addition, 200 meters of vertical steam line were replaced, which were then to be insulated.

A torch tip is located in the flame tower and has the function of burning up excess gas. Maintenance of the gas burner must be carried out at regular intervals where the torch tip is replaced as a unit.

To change a torch at a height of over 100 metres, special equipment and expertise are required. There are no lifting points here, so the lifting device must be mounted on site. A solution was chosen using an A-frame that functions as a fixed-mounted crane with moving components, says head of the mechanical department Bertil Bargård.

This was planned and designed for heavy lifting up to 6 tonnes as the torches to be replaced were of a demanding size.

- The A-frame was constructed in steel and aluminum with the idea that it will be assembled by hand at a height of 100 metres, he continues.

Great commitment

A full-scale lifting test was carried out at Beerenberg's department on Askøy. According to Bargård, there was a great commitment to having the A-frame installed and tested.

Such assignments require enormous competence to plan, design and execute. Beerenberg has extensive experience with climbing and lifting operations both on and offshore, which gave us good conditions to be able to solve this complex job in both planning and execution, he says.
